I listen to a lot of jazz and blues music when I paint. Jazz Singer just showed up one day. When she belts it out with all her soul, the listener cannot help but feel her energy. She exhibits a kind of duende, as described by Frederico Garcia Lorca - her song is as if it originated in the very earth upon which we stand, and climbed up inside her body from the soles of the feet, inducing an almost unbearable feeling of pleasure in those who hear it, and affirming a liberty without end.
