The Rocky Mountains of the East Kootenays tower above the valley floor where the head waters of the Columbia River begin their journey to the west coast.  The benches along the river are thick with pines and provide the habitat for elk, deer, cougar, bears and several ground animals such as beaver and marmot.  This habitat is also shared with humans that care for the land and the animals that live there.  Winter covers the ground to create a bold statement of the mountains muscles.  It feels like they are the sentinels of the valley below.
